For our master’s thesis, my research partner and I developed three artifacts using a Research through Design methodology. The project explored how specific aesthetic choices can be used to intentionally provoke discomfort and fascination, with the goal of creating rich, affective experiences.

By combining material experimentation with responsive behaviors, we reimagined the role of interaction beyond functionality, and focusing instead on how design can engage users on a sensory and emotional level. This work allowed us to investigate alternative approaches to user engagement, opening up new ways of thinking about aesthetics in interaction design.

The Art of Discomfort

Substance reacts to subtle changes in its environment. Blow on the eye and see how it responds to your presence.

Mimicry reveals its inner workings, exposing the intricate machinery beneath its surface. As the machine mirrors human emotion, every gesture is reconstructed through circuits and algorithms.

Resonance acts as an inward mirror, reflecting the subtle sounds of your inner self and inviting a deeper connection with your own being.

The artifacts were presented as part of an exhibition with over 200 visitors.
